summer portraits on display this month

huge thanks to the families who participated in the "portraits in the park" fundraiser for children's happy day school. together we raised nearly 600.00 for the school's scholarship fund -- and we had fun doing it!

stop by the putterham starbucks in chestnut hill/south brookline (on display through august 30) and see for yourself how adorable and photogenic happy day kids are. thanks again!

roslindale open studios -- call for artists

project "one afternoon"

well i promised to post only when i felt like i had something somewhat meaningful to say -- so what does it say about me that i've had nothing to say for 4 months?

hopefully with this post you'll forgive me -- and think it worth the wait.

my idea is called "one afternoon"

it's sort of like a giving tree. a pay-it-forward, if you will. and much better than an email chain that promises prosperity but delivers none.

my "gift" is an afternoon of free portraits as a thank you to those who helped get juli greenwood photography off the ground. in return, i ask just one thing (i know, there's always a catch).

that you'll give 30 minutes (or more) of your time to a friend, neighbor or charity, and ask them to do the same. and grand gestures need not apply, really. i'm talking a batch of cookies for your favorite sweet tooth, some weeding for an elderly neighbor, a ride across town for a carless friend... you get the idea.

i'd love it too if you could keep me posted on what you did and how it went. was your friend inspired to do the same? i'll post updates on our progress here.

my first afternoon of free sessions will be Saturday, July 25, 2:00-5:00 at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline. send me an email or post a comment to secure your spot.

Dollhouses? Yes, Dollhouses.

I don’t get to the MFA nearly as often as I'd like. But recently, I did make time to take my son with some friends, and we all fell in love with the Rachel Whiteread exhibit.

Her illuminated English dollhouses come to life, truly. As viewers, or voyeurs, we become part of the exhibit, part of the Village. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it.

To enter you pull apart heavy, dark, velvety drapes, making the reveal, the surprise of it that much more fantastical, magical.

This peaceful little city makes it easy to check any real-world weight at the door. You’re left with space to wonder what stories these houses have surely lived thanks to the little hands and big imaginations that fed them so.

Even the temptation to touch but knowing you mustn’t is fun.

3 goals for 2009

this time of year is always a time of reflecting and resolving. even if you don't compile a list of resolutions, it seems impossible (and just plain wrong) to avoid thinking about how to learn from the previous to grow in the next.

my colleague Barb Heffner pointed me to Chris Brogan's take -- set 3 goals and pick a word to define each. i love this idea; a broader brush stroke that reminds us where we want to be instead of getting caught up in specificity and loosing sight of the end goal. do we want to shed a set number of pounds or do we want to feel better -- in our skin and in our minds.

so here are mine:

wellness. create. discover.

try it and let me know! and then we can all check in a year from now and see how we did.

a night to benefit the red cross

if you believe in karma, heck even if you don't, you would've been warmed by the goodness at last night's annual CHEN PR (where i'm a director) Red Cross fundraiser. thanks to everyone who came out to share a drink and a laugh, and support the organization that's always there in times of trouble. special thanks to boston-based singer songwriter chris o'brien for playing at the event -- girls everywhere are changing their names to rosa :)

thanks to the roslindale arts alliance www.roslindaleopenstudios.org for working so hard to pull together this year's open studios; it was my first and the neighborhood's biggest yet with more than 90 artists. thanks to everyone who took time to buzz around the village and a little outside in support of local art. and to those of you who made your way to montvale street -- thank you, thank you, thank you. it was fun!
